Hearing aids are rather complex devices. They’re extremely important for anyone who has problems with their hearing, and yet they aren’t built to be as strong and durable as many other medical devices, which is why hearing aid repairs are a common occurrence. The older a hearing aid gets, the more likely it is to have issues, such as problems with sound quality, for instance. There are hundreds of issues that can occur with hearing aids, and each issue has a different fix, which is why whenever there’s a problem it’s best to contact your hearing health professional immediately. (Never try and deal with the problem yourself or you may make it worse.) Out of the many problems that can occur with hearing aids, there are some more common ones too. Wondering what these are? Below is a guide to the four most common hearing aid repairs performed.

1. Hearing aid hook damage

This is a simple but highly common problem. Sometimes, the hearing aid hook gets damaged. This damage can occur in all kinds of ways but is usually the result of general wear and tear. This is the part of the hearing aid that fits snuggly around the ear. If this is damaged, the hearing aid can’t be held in place. If the hook has snapped, the repair is normally rather simple, all it takes is a little bit of glue. Or, if it’s a bad break, a replacement hook may need to be ordered.

2. Damaged microphone

Another common issue with hearing aids is a broken or damaged microphone. Unfortunately, this type of tech issue is not always easy to fix. Usually, it has to be repaired by the manufacturer themselves, rather than by your audiologist, so the sooner you can get your hearing aid to your hearing care provider, the better.

3. Clogged connector tube

One of the main issues with hearing aids is the fact that they stop the ear’s natural process of getting rid of ear wax. This means that sometimes there can be an ear wax build up, either in the ear or in the connector tube. If the connector tube becomes clogged with ear wax, it will need to be replaced. Just make sure that before putting your new connector tube into your ear, you clear it of any excess wax.

4. Damaged battery

A common problem for hearing aid users is a damaged battery. This issue can be as simple as the battery being fitted wrong or as complex as there being an issue with the power that the hearing aid is getting, due to a loose or faulty wire. In the case of more complex issues, the battery compartment will need to be replaced. Hearing aids can get damaged easily, especially with regular, day to day wear, which is why knowing what the most common hearing aid problems are is important for all hearing aid users. As by knowing what the most common problems are, you can manage them more effectively.
