You have gone through your initial hearing aid appointment fitting and have now been living your new life with hearing aids. Your follow-up hearing aid fitting appointment is looming in the future, you are a little nervous about what you should expect when it comes to this appointment. To be honest, it won’t be much different from your initial hearing aid fitting appointment, but let’s go over what you can expect during your hearing aid fitting follow-up appointment.

  • Follow-up. At your hearing aid fitting follow-up appointment, you and your hearing health professional will touch base on your experience with your hearing aids. You will go over your lifestyle and what you have done with your hearing aids since the initial fitting appointment. This will not only help your hearing health professional understand your lifestyle with your hearing aids, but will also help them to understand where there may be issues and the need for adjustments.
  • Review. Your hearing health professional will review with you the general care, maintenance and cleaning when it comes to your new hearing aids. This is done to make sure you are taking proper care of hearing aids and to ensure you remember how you properly care for your hearing aids. Since there was so much information given to you at your initial hearing aid fitting appointment, reviewing care is important to ensure you grasped all of the concepts and retained the information.
  • Fitting. Next, your hearing health professional will check the fit of you hearing aids. They want to make sure it fits properly and comfortably in your ears. Sometimes the earmold fit may be off a bit causing a sore spot in the ear canal, which your hearing health professional can take a look at and assess what can be done to fix it. Sometimes the tubing from you earmold or the dome to your hearing aid behind your ear is too long or short. If this is the case, your hearing health professional can change the tubing length to ensure a proper, snugger fit.
  • Reprogramming. Finally, adjustments to the programs of your hearing aid may need to be made. Be sure to note the sound quality of your hearing aid in different environments prior to this appointment. Does it sound hollow? Is the sound too loud of soft? Does it whistle? Do you use all of the programs? Or do you want a program added because you think you will use it? Advise you hearing health professional of any questions or concerns you may have when it comes to the sound of your hearing aids as they will be able to make adjustments to suit you and your needs.

The follow-up appointment after your hearing care provider fits your hearing aids is an incredibly informative and beneficial time for new hearing aid wearers. Make sure to discuss any concerns or issues you’ve been having with your new devices so you can have the best sound experience possible!
